The Art of American Craftsmanship | Stamping

Have an artistic idea for your client’s custom rug? Our custom design process is easier than one might think.

STEP 1 | DISCOVER
Sample/order request is submitted.

STEP 2 | DESIGN
Design development begins. In this stage, you’ll review and approve artwork developed based on your concept along with samples of the product to ensure you’re getting what you’ve envisioned.

STEP 3 | PRODUCE
Our team goes to work on your handmade, custom design.

Easy, right? Here’s more behind-the-scenes detail on how our team works hard to keep this collaborative process effortless and seamless for you.

Once your custom yarn is dyed our team of expert stampers work on transferring the pattern to the cotton monk’s cloth. Monk’s cloth is the primary backing or substrate for your rug.

Stamping refers to the method we use to transfer the pattern onto the cotton monk’s cloth. The monk’s cloth is stretched taut and square on tack strips. After it’s stretched and drawn to your desired length and width, a special blend of ink is spread over the surface of a wax coated paper. This process ultimately transfers a perforated pattern directly to the cloth.

The pattern repeat is then registered across the length and width of the rug.  Not all patterns have a repeat. In these events, the design is registered in a similar way, but each square of wax paper is individually printed and specified to represent a different section of the pattern to create the overall design. Our stampers will then use a map to decipher the pattern and ink transfer it to the backing.

Once stamping is complete, the lead designer on the project will review for errors or approval.

Next, the backing is married to the yarn and the custom carpet is ready for tufting. Learn more about our hand-tufting process in the weeks to come!
